The heart-lung machine is used during open-heart surgery to take over the function of the body’s heart and lungs. This procedure is called extracorporeal circulation or cardiopulmonary bypass. A perfusionist is responsible for operating the machine. The machine circulates vital oxygen-rich blood to the brain and other vital organs during open-heart surgery, allowing the cardiac surgery and perfusion team to operate on a bloodless and still heart.
